Rodeo Days Recap 2017

Perfect weather brings out crowds!

The 2017 Rodeo May long weekend was outstanding along with phenomenal attendances at the Annual Rodeo topping over 110,000 visitors. The Rodeo Day events which comprise of the Bed Races, the Chili Cook-off and the Annual Rodeo Parade had great audiences as families came in droves to enjoy the old fashioned fun family oriented free events. This year, the Bed Races had a new High School category which saw $750 donated to different departments of Lord Tweedsmuir Sr Secondary. Turkey Party Makers, the Cloverdale Rodeo Youth Initiative Foundation and Envision Financial – Brick Yard Station generously provided $250 ea for the new High school division (which in the future will involve more schools in the District). Bed Race ambassador and Team Captain of Turkey Party Makers – winners of the Men’s Div. for 2017 has been promoting this event through interviews on the radio, in newspapers and TV. Rob has been with the event since its inception and is committed to growing the event with more local competitors. The Bed Race has been expanded over time to include a special guest Husky Run from the folks at Urban Safari Animal Rescue to an exciting demonstration of skateboarding from the Rodeo’s World Round Up Freestyle skating championship. There were a number of skaters from around the world demonstrating some very cool tricks that us older folks cringe at if you hit the pavement after losing your balance.

The 20th Annual Chili cook-off was supported by a number of local restaurants who want to spice up the Rodeo week. The local businesses take their chili recipes very seriously and are pleased to win the praise of the residents who gladly line up to taste their new recipes each year. Special thanks goes to the Rodeo staff for providing a number of Rodeo tickets for prizes and incentives to be involved with the Annual Rodeo. Another big thanks goes to our local super citizen of the year Bruno Zappone who provided money (honorariums) for two marching bands in the Rodeo parade along with cash prizes for a couple of youth who participated in the Annual Decorated Bike Parade. Kudos to Harry and Sons Barber Shop for providing numerous haircut gift cards. Another big thanks to Westminster Savings and the Cloverdale Hunting and Fishing Show for providing several hundred Canadian themed balls, frisbees and footballs for the young ones who attended the Bed Race and the Chili Cook-off.

This year’s Rodeo parade had over 1,100 participants who should all be thanked for coming out to celebrate the Annual Rodeo and for proudly showing everyone their involvement in the community. A big thanks goes out to the Surrey Crime Prevention Society who sent a small army of volunteers to help monitor activity in the parade and control the speed of the entries in the parade. At the end they along with members of the Surrey Association for Community Living went around the entire Cloverdale Town Centre to pick up garbage generated by the parade. Parade organizer Paul Orazietti from the Cloverdale BIA wanted to give “A Very Big Thank You to all of the people who help out with the Rodeo Days events and there are a great number of you and not enough space to mention you all by name.”
