SECRET SANTA’S HELPERS IN CLOVERDALE
Deep inside the BC Vintage Truck Museum workshop, preparations have begun for the 10th Annual Surrey Santa Parade of Lights to be held on Sunday, Dec. 6th at 5pm. Head Elf Fred Monkton along with Brian Busby, Bruno Zappone, Lloyd Lemky, Gord Hallam, Tex Bussey, Noel Cleveland and others have started working on a new Santa’s sleigh along with several other entries for the magical lighted parade. Community spirit keeps the Santa Parade growing along with a record number of sponsors and supporters (especially the City of Surrey) that cover growing operational expenses. Once again the BIA and Chamber are proud to sponsor the amazing collection of Big Rigs that come from the Island Equipment Owners Association (who actually pay their own fuel expenses to come from Vancouver Island to spread Christmas cheer). The front part of the Surrey Santa Parade has a number of entrants from the Big Rigs for Kids Parade who start in Cloverdale and end up in Central City parked around the Surrey City Hall. The convoy gathers at Highway #10 and the By-pass, and then heads west on Hwy #10 (56 Ave) to King George Blvd and heads north to 100 Ave before ringing around the City Hall at 104 Ave.
The Surrey Santa Parade has the largest number of parade entries in the city that includes politicians, local community groups, sport teams, companies, vintage vehicles, horses, R/C’s, dogs, boats, faith groups along with a number of visitors from different parts of the Fraser Valley and Metro Vancouver.
This year there will be two entertainment areas which include food & music for pre-parade activity starting at 4pm. The first will be at the starting point of the parade which is at the BC Vintage Truck museum located at 176A St and 60th Ave (just west of one our major parade sponsors Elements Casino formerly Fraser Downs). On a first come first serve basis, kids of any age will be able to get their photo with Santa by his sleigh float by the Truck Museum. (Please bring your own camera!).
The second entertainment zone at Hawthorne Square is at the heart of historic downtown Cloverdale just across the street from the Parade organizers: The Cloverdale Business Improvement Assoc. and the Cloverdale District Chamber of Commerce. Starting at 4pm, Surrey’s premier, amateur, cappella chorus group SOUNDSCAPE will perform! Once again there will be a number of food vendors (all donating part proceeds to our charities) and activities for children including facepainting. The Hawthorne Square entertainment zone is sponsored by Envision Financial who has recently located at the BrickYard Station. They are also unveiling their new program to Cloverdale called the Full Cupboard Holiday Program that supports the Surrey Food Bank. Between November 16 and December 12, they will be gathering cash donations, gifts or food items to help others in need. Did you know that the Surrey Food Bank can buy more food with less money than individuals can? They have almost 2 to 1 buying power. Donate much needed cash to support our local food bank and Christmas Bureau at any Envision Financial location today or give-on-the-go with their text to donate program. Text FULL to 41010 to donate $10 to the Full Cupboard. This one time or monthly donation will be added to your mobile bill. We also will be accepting donations for the Surrey Food Bank and Surrey Christmas Bureau at the entertainment zones. Please note that you can also help by giving a cash donation to one of our parade ambassadors that will be walking along side the parade entries. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Francis Penny (who has worked on building our Santa float for years) who is in the hospital undergoing important surgery.
You will also be able to get a chance to see Santa when he arrives at Santa’s Hut at Clover Square Village at noon on Saturday, Dec. 5th. The Lions will also be there with a charity BBQ and some local entertainment. Santa will be available for photos at Clover Square Village starting on Dec. 5th to Dec. 21st from noon – 4pm daily. For more event info visit the Cloverdale BIA website: cloverdalebia.com or you can call (604) 576.3155
The Cloverdale BIA and Cloverdale Chamber want to thank everyone including those whose names have not been mentioned for still Believing in Santa and for helping to make the Surrey Santa Parade one of the City’s most magical moments to get together and celebrate!
